Why Wear Rash Guards? Summer 2023

I'm from Puerto Rico, a beautiful Caribbean Island. Like most islands, Puerto Rico is surrounded by beautiful beaches and a lot of natural bodies of water. That being stated, most of us spend a lot of time in the water and as someone who has spent a considerable amount of time participating in water sports, I cannot stress enough the importance of wearing rash guards.

Benefits of Wearing a Rash Guard

Primarily, Rash guards are designed to protect the skin from sunburn, abrasions, and rashes caused by exposure to saltwater, sand, and surfboard wax. That's why they are commonly used in water sports such as surfing, swimming, paddleboarding, and kiteboarding. If you have watched a surf competition on your TV you would have noticed that all of the surfers are wearing rash guards too. They use it to protect themselves.

  • Sun Burn
  •

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV rays are the leading cause of skin cancer, with over 9,500 people diagnosed every day in the United States alone. When you're out in the water, the sun's rays are intensified and can damage your skin in a matter of minutes.

  • Protection Against the Elements
  •

Another benefit they offer is the protection it provides against the elements. Saltwater and sand can be extremely abrasive, causing rashes and chafing on exposed skin. Rash guards create a barrier between your skin and the elements, preventing irritation and discomfort.

  • Quick-drying

  • This quick-drying feature not only makes rash guards more comfortable to wear but also helps to prevent the growth of bacteria and odors.

  • Lightweight and Breathable

  • This allows for maximum flexibility and ease of movement. The last thing you want is to be weighed down by heavy, restrictive clothing while trying to catch a wave or swim laps.

  • Thermal Protection

  • When you're out in the water, the temperature can fluctuate quickly, making it difficult to stay comfortable. Rash guards are designed to wick away moisture from the skin, which helps to keep you cool on hot days and warm on cooler days.

    Types of Rash Guards

  • Short Sleeve Rash Guards

  • These are great for warmer weather, as they protect without adding too much extra warmth. However, they do leave your arms exposed, which can be a drawback if you're in the water for an extended period.

  • Long Sleeve Rash Guards

  • They are ideal for cooler weather and provide extra protection against the sun's harmful UV rays. However, they can be restrictive and limit mobility, especially in the arms.

  • Level of UV protection you need.
  • Style of rash guard that best suits your needs for maximum mobility, flexibility, and protection.

  • These factors will help you narrow down your options and find the perfect rash guard for your needs.

Overall, the importance of wearing a rash guard cannot be overstated. Don't put your health and comfort at risk by neglecting to wear one. Invest in a high-quality rash guard today and enjoy all the benefits that come with it. Happy surfing, swimming, paddle boarding, or kiteboarding! Summer is just starting!
